On the morning of 4 March 1979 the Coast Guard found Sorrow Point Light dark and its keeper, Walter Ames, dead at the foot of the tower stairs. The lantern hatch above him was bolted from inside; the door below was locked with his own key in his pocket. The county ruled a fall and dismissed the assistant keeper for leaving his post.
